Enthusiastic Comment on My Experience of Life over the Past 30 Years

Dear Yun-Kun,

The picture of your life you portrayed, the amazing journey of your 80 years (is it really?), through oppression and then "rebirth"is very touching. You witnessed and experienced so much that was depressing and debilitating without losing your spirit. But when opportunities at last emerged from the repression, you were able to respond with energy and a determination to fully walk into the future.  You have not dwelled on the period of your losses.

If I understand Warren Buffet's quote, you were not swimming naked !

When we met you more than 20 years ago, you were like a man beginning a new life. Coming to California and U.C. Berkeley, you embraced your chance to learn more about and plunge into the world that had been closed off to you for years. You connected with all people who were interested in knowing you and your history: scholars, of course, but also just ordinary citizens. You were an ambassador for the potential relations between two very different nations. Your exquisite dinners served to  your new acquaintances are still talked about here!

Our family has felt privileged to have been your host family. Our children participated in a bit of history through you. John and I have enjoyed a unique friendship. And I was able to go to teach English in China through the Anna Chenault Educational Development Research Center six years ago. It has all been a remarkable opportunity seasoned with friendship.

Today you are a man with privileges and freedoms, appreciating experiences that enriched your life. Happy Birthday!
As always,

If I am wrong about your birthday or your age (I can't believe it), just eliminate or change what is incorrect before posting it.

As always,
