Response to the article of "How I Enjoy My Life after the Reform and Opening Policy was Implemented"

My first trip to China was in 1980.  It was shortly after that time, that I met Yun-kun Wang in my home state of Minnesota   I had been asked to host him in my home along with my family.  It was then that my relationship began with him.  I remember picking him up at the bus station in Minneapolis.  I was immediately impressed with his command of the English language.  I couldn't begin to comprehend how he could gain acceptance to one of our most prestigious universities (University of California, Berkeley).  However, after many hours of discussion, I began to realize that he was a very brilliant man and very fluent in our language.  I was a teacher for many years in our public schools and I know his vocabulary in English is both richer and broader than mine. My family and I have always been proud of his achievements in our country: (MA degree in political science and a Fulbright scholar).  Considering the tremendous adversities he had to overcome in China like the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) which set China backwards in education many years, Mr.Wang certainly proved himself a scholar.  Thanks to the great reforms of Deng Xiaoping, it helped Mr.Wang gain a new life.  I have learned a lot from him over our 28 year friendship.  I have visited China an additional 4 times and have also hosted him in our home 4 more times.  I had the great pleasure of living with him and his family for a week in Beijing in  2005.  He served as my interpreter when I lectured on American Education at Beijing Normal University in 2001 and 2002. He indeed is a wonderful man.
